The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic version of Cialis® to be available in the United States.
The drug is also available as a prescription-only medicine in Canada. But as of now, it is not FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
FDA spokesman Rob Fagan said that Cialis® is currently only available as the first-line treatment for erectile dysfunction in men with a baseline level of the drug in the blood. But he said the agency still may have to increase the number of men seeking treatment to get a generic version.
Fagan said the drug is available in Canada on prescription only.
“This is a prescription drug and we don’t know if that means that it’s available in the U. S.,” Fagan said.
The agency will continue to evaluate the availability of the generic drug under a “prospective” drug-approval program. The FDA is seeking approval of the generic drug for erectile dysfunction in men with a baseline level of the drug in the blood, a drug with a small risk of side effects or the possibility of having a lower drug-approval threshold than the name-brand version. The generic drug will only be available in the United States under a prescription program.
Fagan said the agency will consider the drug as a treatment for erectile dysfunction under the drug name, which is the brand name for Viagra®.
“We have to see what that means, and we’re trying to find a way to do that,” Fagan said. “So I don’t see that as a problem for us.”

“It is very important that they have an FDA approved indication and that they are safe and effective for treating erectile dysfunction,” Fagan said.
Fagan said he will study the drug as an alternative for treating erectile dysfunction in men who are already taking medication.
“This is very important because it gives us hope and hope to get men to get out of the drug business,” he said.
Fagan said the agency is also looking at ways to improve the safety and efficacy of the drug.
“I am not going to stop talking about ED treatment right now because we need to do it in a real way,” he said. “We need to take the opportunity to do it in a real, real way.”
